Eve’s Apple to the Last Supper: Picturing Food in the Bible

The Boydell Press (2017)
210 x 280mm, 184pp

Work carried out: page design and make-up

A richly illustrated examination of food in the Bible, concentrating on the social aspects of eating, this book deals with twenty episodes which are frequently chosen as subjects by artists, from early mosaics and wallpaintings through to glorious old masters.

The large format facilitated a generous layout. Classic art requires a similarly classic typeface, in this case Adobe Garamond Pro, while details in Myriad Pro add a modern note; chapter titles and subheadings in Centaur provide continuity with the front cover.

The design itself presented some interesting design challenges, especially with such a variety of content to consider and the understandably diverse spread of images across chapters, but we were able to keep figures close to where they’re cited in the text, as well as maintaining their thematic connection.

The author, a former director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, wrote to us afterwards:

I am writing […] to send both of you warmest thanks for your design work on From Eve’s Apple to the Last Supper. The whole book depended on constructing a successful relationship between text and image and I was really worried whether this would be achieved. I soon saw that it had been managed with great expertise and insight.
