Sacrament an Alter: The Sacrament of the Altar – A Critical Edition with Translation

Work carried out: page design and make-up
‘Sacrament an Alter’ (The Sacrament of the Altar) is a Cornish patristic catena which appears in the Tregear Manuscript (BL Add. MS 46397). This is the first ever critical edition, despite being the longest surviving example of Cornish prose.
While we routinely typeset parallel editions, with the source text and translation on facing pages with matching page breaks, this project brought the challenge of presenting four simultaneous texts:
- top left, the complete, uncorrected text of the manuscript with its ideosyncratic layout;
- bottom left, a corrected, edited text to aid interpretation;
- top right, the original text from John Foxe’s Actes and Monuments, from which the Cornish was translated;
- bottom right, a modern English translation.
